What we’re about
A COMMUNITY FOR FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY.
Welcome New York to The Art of Photography! Our purpose is to spark creativity, open new doors, incite discussion and learn from each other in a positive and sharing environment. The basis of which is to facilitate the merging of the principles of art and graphic design with excellent camera craft. To take each one of us, no matter what level of experience, to places, levels and worlds that are out of our comfort zone. To grow, to see, to inspire unique visions. Our critique programs, our photo shoots and our educational sessions are free. Your submissions for discussion are for you to choose without regard to theme or genre.
The Art of Photography began as a museum art school program in 2002 and has expanded to over 13,000 members worldwide. So many of whom have grown into fine art photographers that are hugely represented in international award shows. New York, we are truly excited for your participation and look forward to your development as Fine Art Photographers. Be on the lookout for some very exciting photo shoots and presentations that will be posted on an on-going basis. Also join our International Site to check out over 200 albums created by our members. Thank you for your interest and good shooting.

Let's meet, discuss this photo shoot, and have a really great time exploring the myriad and beautiful photo ops afforded by this less-traveled gem.
When designing Central Park, planners decided to maintain a natural theme that has remained true to this day throughout the park. With three formal gardens, the Conservatory is the only exception. Next to the Conservatory exists a hilly wooded area known as the Loch and the Ravine. Forty acres in the NW corner constitute the North Woods. It is an area of old woods with towering dense foliage and winding dirt trails equating to a light hike or stroll through the woods. These areas were originally designed to resemble upstate parks, such as the Adirondacks. It was a way to bring nature to those who couldn't afford excursions far outside the city. (Tip: use the following Central Park map.)
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Conservatory Gardens- Intricate formal gardens - flowers, geometric/elaborately designed hedges, and statues. The newly renovated south garden is English , central is Italian, and the currently closed north is French.
- People posing for wedding and engagement photographers
- Birds (over 200 species migrating in the fall plus local species)
- Dense forests like those upstate
- Potentially fall foliage. (See the fall foliage map.)
- Flowing water (streams, fountains, and possibly the most beautiful waterfalls in the city on Montayne’s Rivulet)
- Harlem Meer landscaped lake in the northeast corner of the park, the source of the Ravine's stream
- Architecture (picturesque bridges, Glen Span Arch on the west, and the engineering marvel called the Huddlestone Arch on the east).
- Active people (cross country runners/cyclists on the hilly area of the Loch and the paths around it)
Keep moving----- Get involved----- Tell a story----- Feel the energy
Logistics
- It is probable, but not guaranteed, that fall foliage will be starting around the time of this trip
- The north area of Central Park sees drastically less traffic than the rest of the park, but fall foliage may bring increased tourism by leaf peepers and birders.
- The Ravine, which is where the stream flows through the Loch, is 0.85 miles (1.37 km) and can be navigated in about ten minutes not counting photo stops which can easily add hours.
- The Loch itself is larger and open for exploration.
- The Conservatory can be walked through in roughly the same.
- The gap between the two can be walked in five minutes or less.
- Within the Conservatory is a restroom that normally does not have lines.
- The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center on the north shore of Harlem Meer also has a restroom.
Meeting Location/Event Host
The entrance to the Conservatory gate (Vanderbilt Gate) is on 5th Ave & E 105th St. Look for our host Rickson sporting a beige jacket. Please try to arrive around 10 AM to say hello and discuss the shoot.
