Queer Book Club #10 – „A Closed and Common Orbit” by Becky Chambers

Details

Join us for dinner and discussion about queer books! For our next book, we will be reading „A Closed and Common Orbit” by Becky Chambers.

Blurb
A note about this being the second book in the series. These books pretty much stand alone. They are in the same universe, but generally follow different characters with the occasional reference to previous characters.

*spoilers for the first book*
This book follows the story of Lovelace, an AI who previously was installed in a ship. In the first book of the series, the ship is managed by an AI called Lovey (Lovelace), but the ship is badly damaged and they have to reinstall the AI. When they do so, there is a coin flip as to whether or not the AI will delete prior memory on booting. Lovey loses the coin flip and her memory is erased. The new AI is the same Lovelace program but without the memories of her love for the crew members. The engineer of the ship is especially torn up because he loved Lovey (in an altogether taboo way), so the crew decided to install the AI into a highly illegal fake human body and send her away rather than kill her off. When A Closed and Common Orbit begins, Lovelace has been in her body for a total of 28 minutes and has very little knowledge of the events of the first book except for the reasons why she had to leave.

This story line is completely separate from the first book, so while we highly recommend the first one, it isn’t necessary to understand the second one.

We will be also choosing the book for our next meeting, so please think about it and come along to share some titles!

Amy & Izabella

Please note…

1. If our team can’t communicate with you we will move you to the waitlist.

2. Please purchase something at the restaurant, as we can’t use their space for free.

3. As space is limited, please only sign up if you will read at least some of the book and will attend.

4. If you sign up but can no longer make it (or didn’t read the book at all), please update your RSVP as soon as possible. Updating your RSVP well ahead of the event allows us to manage the waitlist; know who to look out for at the start of the event; and manage any relevant bookings. 5. If you didn’t update your RSVP for a previous event, we will move you to the waitlist for all future events until we hear from you to confirm you understand these conditions.

6. If you don’t have a clear face pic on your profile, please note we won’t be able to look out for you at the start of the event - you’ll have to say hello first!
